Meet Dr. Margaret K. Winkler
Margaret K. Winkler, MD, FAAP, FCCM was a Pediatric Resident from 1991-1994. Today, she is a Professor of Pediatrics; Director, UAB Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine; and the Ann Dial McMillan Endowed Chair in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.

How many other interns were there during your intern year? About 18
What is your funniest memory from residency/fellowship? My first month on wards they called a code in the ER. Deanna Ruddell was the other intern and she was worried about why they would call a code in the ER. We went down and walked into the trauma room to an approximately 400lb navy blue old man. Deanna looked at me and said, “this is why I went into pediatrics!”.
If you knew you were going to be deserted on an island, what five things would you take? My Nook, really good food, a hammock, a beach towel and a toothbrush.
What book has had the biggest impact on you? The Bible
What is your preferred method of getting the news? National Public Radio
What is your proudest personal accomplishment to date? Watching young people that I have helped train or mentor be successful.
What is the best vacation you have ever had? A canoeing, camping and hiking trip at Glacier National Park and floating the Missouri River.
What was the last movie you saw? The Sound of Music (I watch it a lot!)
What is the last non-work related book you read? The Help
What’s your biggest pet peeve? Laziness
What kind of research are you most passionate about? Multi-center translational studies addressing topics in pediatric critical care.
What is your favorite part of your job? Fixing really sick children
What words of advice would you share with new physicians? Follow your passion if you ever hope to be excellent at anything.
What is the best advice you've ever given or received? Leadership: Model the way, Inspire a shared vision, Challenge the process, Enable others to act, and Encourage the Heart.
