UAMS Head Start/EHS child nutrition services help families in meeting each child’s nutritional needs and in establishing eating habits that nurture healthy development and promote life-long well-being.  Growth screenings are conducted two times per year to assess each child’s nutritional status and growth pattern.  BMI letters are sent home to share the results with parents/guardians.

We provide one-half to three-fourths of the child’s nutritional needs.  All meals follow USDA guidelines.  Food items high in nutrients and low in fat, sugar, and salt are offered to the children.  If your child has a special dietary need, (food allergy, religious preference, etc.), we must have documentation signed by a physician and/or religious clergy before Head Start can honor the request.  Without this signed documentation, your child will receive the same food on the menu as the other children.

We utilize the Color Me Healthy curriculum.  This curriculum emphasizes the importance of healthy eating and physical activity.  Color Me Healthy includes classroom activities, songs, games, and imaginary trips all developed especially for preschool age children.
